Washing day
After a big day yesterday the slower pace of today is much welcomed. I'm still upset about my camera as the damage was so avoidable. When I return home I'll see if it can be repaired but water and cameras often don't lend themselves to a good prognosis.
So what's a depressed traveller to do? Move on and enjoy what awaits. And that's exactly what we did. We also had clothes washing to do so this was first thing on the agenda.
Trier is the home of Karl Marx whose house he was born in is now a museum which we visited whilst the clothes dried. It was very interesting to hear of his life and work and to understand the human side behind this controversial man.
Most of the old town of Trier belongs to the UNESCO world heritage and we visited Roman baths dating 4th century, a Roman amphitheatre where gladiator and animal fights happened (2nd century), Konstantin Basilika - the throne room of Emperor Constantine the Great (4th century), St. Peter's Cathederal - the oldest bishops church in Germany (4th century) that holds the tunic of Christ and the Church of Our Lady which is relatively new (13th century). These were all within a 15 minute walk from one another so it wasn't tough going.
There are quite a few beggars here as well whose efforts seem to go unrewarded. K is very intolerant of them and I have to admit what was a curiosity for us in the beginning has quickly become pests.
