3: The house where the Tunnel of Hope is located
4: In the tunnel
The weather has been still a little wet and cold and K and I only commented last night that we have only had about two weeks of warm weather. It was jumpers and jeans again. In fact there was snow on the mountains on the way to Sarajevo.
We visited the Butmir Tunnel or Tunnel of Life that was dug during the war linking the besieged city to the free zone providing a life and supply line through which passed the aged, injured, food, fuel and soldiers. We caught a taxi there as we had no hope of finding it on our own. The taxi waited for us why we visited the site. Only 25 of the 800 metre tunnel can be walked but 3 million people used it during the conflict. We had our own personal tour guide who told us not only about the tunnel but the war in general. Incredibly interesting but equally sad.
A video showed footage of the tunnel being used including archival footage of bombing of Sarajevo. There was also a small museum displaying various tools and equipment used in the tunnel. Various celebrities have visited this site including Morgan Freeman, John Travolta, Orlanda Bloom and Kevin Spacey. The taxi was waiting for us after a 45 minute tour and including the fare to and return was $AU18.00 - bargain!
