Day 52 - Casola in Lunigiana Tuscany Italy

Well yesterday was a exactly what we needed - rest and relaxation. Today has also been declared a bludge day since Carlo and Piera leave this afternoon we thought it best to spend time with them. Carlo and Piera whom we met here in 2010 and have kept in touch through letters are here as well. Their holiday house is opposite to where we are and we organized to catch up on when we arrived. Unfortunately this was a short get-together as they left this afternoon having to return to Genoa.
Luscignano - the actual village, is near the Apuan Mountains inland from La Spezia. It dates back to the 13th century. It is a small village with about 47 residents and because it doesn't have the trappings to attract the tourist trade, it has been preserved intact. It consists of winding narrow paths among very old buildings made from stone. There is an old monastery whose bells ring on the hour and plays a delightful tune at 8.30pm (but does not ring all night.)

K and I did drive into Fivizzano yesterday and today for some additional supplies which is a 20 kilometer round trip through winding scenic hills. The kids stayed behind and hung out with Eleanora - Carlo and Piera's 13 year old granddaughter. It was great for K and I to have some time alone.

After dinner there is Passeggiata where people take walks or sit on the many benches to engage with one another. So last night we did this and it was very interesting as Eleanora can speak limited English as can Carlo but we must speak slowly and use gestures. These two became our interpreters for the others. The occasional use of an English/Italian app was also useful. A great time. It's so interesting to watch the kids teach Eleanora English and her teach our kids Italian. Despite some language barriers, playing seems to be a universal language.

Tomorrow we'll hit the sightseeing road.
