Day 49 - Verona Italy

We left the home of Casanova by catching a water bus to P. Le Roma then picking up our next rental car which is somewhat smaller and hence more cramped than the Partner Teepee we had.
In total it took five and a half hours to get to Verona by the time we walked through the alleyways of Venice, waited and rode the water bus, waited for the rental car and drove including getting lost.

No sooner had we checked in we were in the car again for the supposedly 10 minute drive to the Old Town of Verona. Again we got lost despite having a sat-nav so the trip took about 40 minutes.

The Old Town of Verona is quite beautiful but crowded with tourists. There was a large concert being held in the pink marble Roman amphitheatre built in the first century - now Verona's opera house.

We visited Casa di Giulietta (Juliette's house). You know Juliette - Romeo's girlfriend. Whilst they may have been fictional, there is a popular myth that states this was her house and her balcony. One floor below is a statue of her where it is considered good luck to rub her right breast. Too many people were waiting to fondle her so I gave this bit a miss. Chewing gum - some shaped like a heart help stick hundreds of love letters to the wall of her house. Others have used more modern methods such a Stick-it notes.  There are also hundreds of lovelocks on window bars and words of love scrawled over two large walls.

We also saw Castelvecchio (Vecchio Castle) a 14th century fortress that was heavily bombed in WWII but has since been restored and Ponte Scaligero (Scaligero Bridge) that was destroyed also during the war and has been rebuilt. I met a Russian man travelling solo through Italy. I couldn't imagine doing this on my own so good on him.

K twisted her ankle whilst crossing one of the well maintained Italian road. There was a hole in the cobbled road on the pedestrian crossing that was difficult to see. it has been giving her a bit of bother.

We became lost on attempting to return to the hotel which is room 521 by the way (there's that 21 again) due to roads being closed because of the concert. I'll admit I was getting somewhat frustrated and there was some tension in the car for most of the trip back but all is good now.

Tomorrow we head to Tuscany.
