Today marks the halfway point of our holiday and what a place to spend it. Breakfast was basic and in a dining room where tables are shared and we shared ours with some people from near Milan. They spoke English well and after one person found out that K was an emergency nurse she told us that she was an emergency doctor. They found it amazing that the kids could be out of school for three months without having to repeat the lost time.
We walked and walked and I never thought I'd be spoilt for choice in subject matter to photograph but there are so many beautiful buildings and objects it's hard to draw the line and say enough is enough.
We had to do it and that was take a ride on a gondola. It has been the first time since we started that the kids were so quite - no fighting or nagging - just absorbing the beauty and peace of the canals. They loved it as did we.
K then had a haircut (I couldn't see any difference) but the bank account did. Everything is so expensive as one would imagine given it is such a popular spot for tourists. But we have at times ventured off the tourist routes and found things there a little cheaper. We came back for a little rest before venturing out again to St Peter's Square. The buildings are world heritage listed and for good reason. The basilica with its frescos and amazing statues competes with .........Waiters in white suits serve cappuccinos at €10.50 ($14.50) each whilst a four piece band plays. But the biggest attraction of all among these incredible buildings, amazing shops and the sights, sounds and smells that tempt the senses were the pigeons. That's right - the pigeons. People and this included us, just stood there as they landed on us. Some people fed them, some children chased them and a few ignored them but most people's attention was spent on them.
We'll catch a ferry tomorrow to Murano.
