Up at 6am for a coffee and to watch the ferry arrive in Croatia. We were here in 2010 so decided to use this UNESCO world heritage listed area as a gateway to neighboring countries as we enjoyed it so much last time.
None of us slept very well on the ferry so are quite tired (and a couple quite cranky but I won't say whom).
Going through customs there appeared to be an issue with K's passport as the officer kept looking at it, eventually shrugging and handing it to her. We didn't inquire as to why but believe it may be because K has a Croatian surname different to us three.
There was about a 15 minute walk to the apartment where we had to wait three hours as it was not ready but it is easy to fill in this time in such a beautiful place. We had breakfast in Sperun a small area where K's father has a cousin.
Split is in total contrast to Italy as it is clean, well maintained, much cheaper, much friendlier, things are in service and places are open. There a narrow little streets everywhere that just go on and on with wonderful shops and architecture. I had forgotten how special it was. We just couldn't stop exploring. There is not a lot of tourists here which only enhances the area.
Croatia becomes a member of the European Union on the 1st of next month but retains their currency the Kuna for the next seven years although we have been told that it may never change. Most places only accept Kuna and not the Euro so we had to obtain some.
We feel re-energized here and want to see more. I have already had some great photo opportunities and they seem to be endless. And talk of photo opportunities, both my sister Karen and I have had some of our images accepted in the Harvey Bay National Digital Salon Exhibition and she has won a medal for one of her efforts - great work Karen!
We decided to stay an extra day here so rearranged accommodation, car hire and organized the ferry.
