We decided today to just drive about and visit a marble mine as the mountains, whilst seemingly covered with snow, is actually visible marble. This area is where, according to Carlo, Michelangelo obtained the marble for his statue 'David' and he was right.
After K had a huge sleep in we drove the beautiful scenic route to Venite A Fantiscritti - the only marble mine in this area where we could do an underground tour. We were driven into the mine and given some background on how the mine operates. It only employs five miners that take a week to cut a large piece. It was quite amazing there. Everything was wet. The floor was marble but smooth as was the walls and ceiling. Large columns must remain to support the mountain from caving in. It was 26 degrees outside but 12 inside. We stood in the centre of the mine and along one tunnel was where Michelangelo's marble for David came from. The car's carpet is white rather than black because of the marble dust.
Tomorrow is our last day here so we have decided to use it wisely and bludge the day away.
