Day 61 - Florence Italy

Finn and I were up early to beat the queues to climb the 463 steps of the Cathedrale di Santa Marla del Flore's copula or dome. I often wonder climbing some these structures how emergencies services would extract an injured or heart attack victim. The top view was a little disappointing as only roof tops could be seen. I don't know whether I'm becoming desensitized to panoramic views but it didn't do it for me.

The ladies were still in bed upon our return and still asleep. We agreed yesterday to visit the Galileo Museum and as with most tourist attractions and given that Italy is in a financial crisis it is only open for half a day once a week. This time limit galvanized the girls into action. The museum is a 12th Century building and holds thousands of scientific and medical instruments including Galileo's telescopes and even his forefinger, thumb and tooth! The instruments date back to the 1500's and is the only kind of this type of museum in the world.

After being virtually kicked out by 1pm and seeing many people turned away because the tourist dollar is not needed, we walked southern side of the Ponte Vecchio bridge, exploring the wonderful backstreets.

Lots of climbing and walking today and kids complained and wanted to return to where we are staying. It's easy to forget they have smaller legs and they tire quicker. Tomorrow they'll rest them for it's sitting down all afternoon in trains and a ferry.
